Random Musing.

Everybody has mile posts in their life.  Moments when, for better or worse, their life is never quite the same again.  Times, when recalled, a person can point to and say, "This changed my life."

One of those important moments is when you realize you can buy and cook bacon anytime you want.

What's been going on.

Not that anybody else cares.

I am pretty proud of myself this week.  I managed to hit 3 places featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

On Sunday, El Indio in San Diego, CA.
On Tuesday, Rino's Place in Boston, MA.
and Today, Clanton's Cafe in Vinta, OK.

So far, the food is 3 fer 3 as in great eats.  I'll try to hit another place or two tomorrow in Indiana and Ohio.

Range Day Report.

This time with pics!

Since hunting season is quickly approaching, I thought it might be a good idea to make sure that I can actually, you know, hit stuff with my rifles.  And since every other hunter and his kin are probably having the same idea, I figured now would be a good time to get out there.  Early enough that maybe only the black powder guys are out, late enough that I'm not doing it in OMGLOLWTF heat.

Nice day today, upper 70's to lower 80's with a good breeze straight down the range.

I loaded up the Garand, the M14 and the AR.  Because I just wasn't sure what I'd be hunting and with what.  It was actually a quick rezeroing session today.  I'd had the Garand looked at by an expert since I'd shot it last and he'd moved the rear sight around.  But the Danes were nice enough to leave their zeroing sticker on the inside of the stock, so I used that and I figured I'd see what that did for me.  The M14 really hadn't been messed with too much and the AR had only had a rough zero from when I first shot it right after the build.

Like I said, quick day.  The upper left is the Garand using the Danes zero info.  I guess they do know how to shoot over there.  Or at least some of them do. The upper right is the M14.  Both of them using iron sights. Not bad, if I do say so myself.  Center is the AR using a 4x ACOG.

The first 3 were at 6:30 - 7 right on the edge of the X ring.  I adjusted up 3 for the next group and up 2 more for the final group.  With one flyer at 9.

I then finished the clip or mags on a half size steel torso at 100m.  Went 6/6 with the Garand, 17/17 with the M14, and 15/20 with the AR.  I think I was sighting wrong with the ACOG.  I was aiming between the shoulders and hitting head shots.  Which makes sense for the trajectory/zero/distance.  I should have aimed at the lower COM and expected shots in the breastbone/heart region. That's why I missed 5 with the AR. That's my story and I'm sticking too it. 

Then I had Chicago style pizza at the new place 2 blocks from home.  Yummo.

It's beef for chriminey...

I've come to believe that South Africa, as a general rule*, can take a piece of beef, no matter how bad and truly make it terrible.

*There may be individuals who are the exception. But if there are, they don't live in South Africa.

Random Musings

Apparently, the actors inside the Godzilla suit for the Japanese movies had a habit of nearly suffocating.


Whoever thought it would be a good idea to take the king sized candy bars and just stick two fun sized ones in the wrapper needs to be taken out back and shot... slowly. When I buy a king sized bar, I WANT a king sized bar. Not some under grown thing they call "fun" sized. What is that anyway? Did some team of cross-discipline scientists and engineers get together, spend millions of government research money and measure fun? I can see it now. "Yes, Senator. We've finally broken through the glee barrier and quantified fun. This is exactly one unit of fun. Now about next years funding..." And those stupid fun sized bars are smaller cross sectional than the king sized bars used to be! If I'd wanted a fun sized bar, I would have gone to the store and bought a bag of fun sized bars. Not gotten ripped off at the vending machine for two of them. You know what, shooting that asshat slowly is too good for him. He needs to be stood up before a firing squad while being drawn and quartered for life.


A team of mathematicians at MIT submitted a geometric proof today that may very well turn the universe on it's ear. It took 12 of them 5 years, but they think they've proven that there is exactly 12.421 lbs of fruitcake on the entire planet and it just keeps getting passed around from person to person. The implications are astounding. The corollary law of conservation of fruitcake is being examined by the team of physicists that first postulated the 1st Law Of Bacon: Bacon can be neither created nor destroyed it can only GET IN MY BELLAH!

The Gathering

has begun.

Snarkybytes started first. He hooked through Oklahoma City on his way to pick up Breda Fallacy and then spend a couple of days with the Atomic Nerds. They should show up at the gathering Thursday with beer!

Old_NFO is meeting me here today and we'll continue on to FarmGirls on Thursday.

Lucrative Pain is linking up with super secret guest and will be driving in on Thursday as well.

Snarktastic will be flying in and then being picked up Thursday.

Ambulance driver and spawn should be showing up around then too.

In fact for a blog meet that doesn't start till saturday, the party seems to be rolling in early. That's a win in my book.

LawDog and Phlegm Fatal hopefully will get in Saturday with a couple of others from the Texas Contingent.

Bayou Renaisaunce Man and Wing will be joining us via the wonders of the innertubez. Get well soon, ol' chap.

Another Day in the Life of a Charter Pilot post.

Today was an easy day. After the last two days of cancelled trips. (Only after I'd already gotten out to the airport.) We had a nice easy flight down to New Orleans. Enough time for dinner and then back again. Easy peasy. We went to a new place, for us, called CastNet on Haynes. Our usual place was already closed for the day and this place came recommended by the line guys. I had a shrimp po-boy, dressed and fries. I must say, for a small neighborhood place, the place was packed and the food was pretty good. There's two sides. One the one you can get prepared seafood and gumbos and on the other they have live and fresh seafood.

If you're around Lakefront airport, definately give it a try.

This is a nice java-y Stout from Ska Brewing, Durango CO.

One of the beers I ran across this last month that I wished I had time to pick up was out of a Moab Brewery in Moab UT. It was called Polygamy Porter. I had one just for the name and really liked the flavor and weight.
